For 50 years, the Effie Yeaw Nature Center has been shaped by the people who show up—day after day—with curiosity, generosity, and care for this place. As part of our 50th anniversary celebration, we’re sharing stories of those people who make the Nature Center what it is.

Inside Arden recently featured one of those stories.

In Wild & Free, reporter Jessica Laskey captures the spirit of the Nature Center through the eyes of longtime volunteer Kari Bauer—a docent, birder, and steady presence whose love for this landscape reflects what so many feel when they walk these trails. From welcoming visitors to inspiring curiosity about birds and wildlife, Kari’s story is a reminder that volunteers are the heartbeat of the Nature Center.

The article is also a love letter to this place: 77 acres of oak woodland and riparian habitat, free to visit, open to all, and filled with moments of discovery—for kids, adults, and everyone in between.

We’re grateful to Inside Arden for helping shine a light on the Effie Yeaw Nature Center during this milestone year, and to Jessica Laskey for sharing Kari’s story!

You can meet Kari in action at our upcoming Bird and Breakfast fundraiser on March 21, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. This popular annual event pairs guided bird walks with a shared breakfast and supports the Nature Center’s programs and stewardship work.
